Monolith Monsters

It was during my walks through various towns in the Paris suburbs, particularly in the Val-d'Oise, that I became aware of how certain Neolithic monoliths were largely neglected and underappreciated as part of French heritage. Sometimes, these ancient stones are even relocated and repurposed as decorative elements on roundabouts. My aim was to reflect on this "revenge" of the monoliths: how these relics, which bear witness to a distant past and a rich history, have been reduced to mere decorative objects. What place do they truly deserve in the collective history of monuments in the Paris suburbs?

During my research, I came across the science fiction film The Monolith Monsters by John Sherwood, which inspired me to draw a parallel—almost sculptural—between the "revenge" of these monoliths and the way science fiction has built an imaginative narrative around such ancient objects. This led me to consider how these monuments, relegated to the periphery of our collective memory, might find a new and more meaningful place in the cultural landscape of the Paris suburbs today.
